Members of the Society, and local residents, will be excited
to know that several members are currently working on a new project. It has long been felt that, although Redcliffe has a
unique place in the history of Queensland, the area lacks any tangible evidence of our most remarkable historical event, which
was the first European Convict Settlement right here in Redcliffe. You can walk all over Redcliffe, and not see one shred of evidence that the
convict settlement was ever here. Our feeling is that, like many other places around the world, Redcliffe should be highlighting its history to visitors
and locals alike. In our own Moreton Bay Region, we have two excellent “Historical Villages” which attract thousands
of visitors every year.
A great start in this direction is the idea of building a replica of Lt. Miller’s Commandant’s
Cottage, within the same area where the original cottage was located. Led by our President, Doug Smith, a small but very enthusiastic
committee has started to research the original cottage. We will shortly begin the process of acquiring
money to help get the project off the ground. We feel that a replica cottage, properly run and maintained, would be a great attraction for visitors
and locals alike. It would boost tourism to our area, and highlight the unique position that Redcliffe holds in the history
of Queensland. Anyone who would
like to be a part of this new project or who has artefacts or information about the first settlement, can contact the Society
via our “Contact Us” page. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted. We always welcome new Members - Check out our Membership Page.

the Redcliffe Cottage may have looked like, but was built from timber with brick footings and had a verandah on three sides.
